Artist Statement
Relocating to Montana has had a tremendous impact on my work. Particular attention has been given to the texture and color of the geological features that surround me. Peaks are omnipresent, but the occasional interactions with these features up-close are what encourage exploration, meditation, and awareness. It is this intimate interaction with surface that I attempt to capture in each piece.
I have begun to think about form differently since being at the Bray. Edge, curve, silhouette and volume have become increasingly important and I often think about these qualities in relation to how they interact with the flame path in the kiln and how they operate in a space once fired. This body of work is a continuation of my exploration of the soda firing process and serves as a response to the things I’ve noticed while living in Montana.
Note on firing:
Works were soda fired in a gas kiln. Some works used raw clay dug out at location where the artist is based.
